Garrett grew up in California. These days, he is the Jeff Metcalf Humanities in the Community Fellow at the University of Utah.

His recent fiction, criticism, and hybrid work appears in venues like The Florida Review, The Rumpus, and Hayden’s Ferry Review, among others. He is a contributing writer to Chicago Review of Books, a books editor at Quarterly West, and is currently at work on a novel about artificial intelligence, loneliness, and the San Francisco Bay Area in the year 2009.
